The
term “soul food” didn’t turn out to be common until the 1960s. With the rise of
the Black Nationalist movements and civil rights during the 1960s, many African
Americans sought to regain their part of the American cultural inheritance.
Soul food cookbooks and restaurants continued to be popular through the ’70s.
Today it is known in the whole world. You can go to an African restaurant in Perth city and ask about it.
The
History
The term may have first been used in 1962 by poet and civil rights activist Amiri
Baraka. Sylvia Woods had opened her now-famous Harlem restaurant Sylvia’s in
that same year; today, Woods is known by many as “the queen of Soul
Food.”
Soul
food has its roots in slavery when African Americans had to make do with
whatever was on hand. For the next hundred years after the elimination of
slavery, many African-Americans kept using cheaper ingredients for food. Of
course, soul food isn’t entirely defined by a cultural or racial divide.
\A
heavier hand with salt and pepper, more capsicum pepper heat and larger use of
offal meat are proportional characteristics of soul versus country cooking.
Soul
food
Today,
there are African food bars in Australia where you
can taste authentic African food. Several foods that are
basic in southern cuisine and soul food were tamed or consumed in the African
Savanna and the sultry tropical regions of West and Central Africa. These
consist of many leafy greens, black-eyed peas, pigeon peas, and sorghum. Rice
is a daily staple side dish in soul food. It is the center of dishes such as
rice and red beans. Ask the African food catering services in Perth and they will give you the knowledge you seek.
There
are many documented parallels between the food of West Africans and soul food
recipes. The heat levels of many soul food dishes, as
well as several ingredients found within them, make the distinction. Peppers
used to add spice to food. This included malagueta pepper, as well as peppers
inhabitant to the western hemisphere such as the red (cayenne) peppers.
Many
methods changed the overall flavor of soul food. Items such as seeds, nuts,
and rice contributed to added dimensions of growing flavors. These techniques
included frying with palm oil, roasting, steaming in leaves such as a banana
leaf, and baking in ashes.
